  • Kell Brook +175
  • Errol Spence Jr. -205

My Pick

The 31-year-old Brook will be fighting in his hometown of Sheffield and will enter the ring with an impressive record of 36-1 with 26 Kos. He put up an entertaining fight against Golovkin last year even though he moved up two weight divisions, but ultimately ended up with a broken orbital bone for his efforts. Brook won his IBF title in August of 2014 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California with an impressive majority-decision win over former champ Shawn Porter of America.

The new champion then sat out a few months after he was stabbed with a machete in the leg during an attack while on holiday in Tenerife. Brook certainly isn’t the biggest welterweight around as he stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 69-inch reach. He turned pro back in 2004 and has fought 184 rounds since then. Before beating Porter, Brook was a former British Welterweight Champion. His biggest fights up until then were against the likes of Philip Kotey, Lovemore NDou, Matthew Hatton and Carson Jones.

As far as power goes, Brook isn’t really known as much of a big hitter, but his current knockout ratio stands at 68 per cent per cent and his power is slightly underrated. He also owns a pretty good chin despite the outcome of the Golovkin bout. He can fight on the back foot as well as going forward and will need to land something solid early in the fight to make Spence wary of his power.

The 27-year-old year-old Spence of Desoto, Texas will enter the ring with a perfect record of 21-0 along with 18 Kos. He stepped up in class when meeting Chris Algieri in April of last year after previously beating opponents such as Phil Lo Greco, Chris van Heerden, Samuel Vargas and Alejandro Barrera. Spence has boxed 77 rounds since turning pro in 2012, but has a lot of amateur experience as he competed at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England.

Spence isn’t that tall either as he stands just over 5-feet-9-inches and has a 72-inch reach, which gives him a three-inch reach advantage on Brook. He has good speed and power and enters the fight with an impressive knockout ratio of 86 per cent despite not being regarded as a one-punch knockout artist. However, he’s won eight straight fights by way of stoppage. Spence has a fine jab and will be trying to establish it before unleashing his power shots.

Prediction…

This is a competitive matchup with Spence having youth on his side, but Brook having the hometown fans behind him. There’s a good chance this will go the distance and if it does it will probably be a tossup. Look for a close fight with Spence doing just enough to win a controversial decision. But don’t rule out anything, including a draw.

Both boxers will be backed in the betting shops as it’s that close.

It’s already been a tremendous 2017 for boxing fans and we’re about to get treated to even more high-class action when Kell Brook and Errol Spence Jr. square-off this Saturday night.

Errol Spence Kell Brook Odds

Bramall Lane in Sheffield is where they’ll meet for their mouth-watering IBF world welterweight title bout with champion Brook (36-1,25KO) facing a tough task against American Spence Jr (21-0,18KO).

The bookies have the challenger as the slight favourite to depose ‘The Special One’ but does that mean ‘The Truth’ will prevail?

Here’s how our boxing trader Tommy Young is calling the action…

Ladbrokes News:Tommy, tell us why Spence Jr. is fancied to do the business and wrestle the title from Brook’s grasp?

Tommy Young: On paper this looks a very close fight. Brook’s tight win over Shawn Porter is the best result either fighter can boast.

Kell Brook Vs Errol Spence

But since winning the IBF world welterweight title in that fight almost three years ago, all three of his defences have been against poor opposition and he has that loss against Gennady Golovkin at middleweight.

Spence, on the other hand, has recorded decent scalps in his last two fights against Leonard Bundu and Chris Algieri respectively. The unbeaten southpaw comes into the fight with the better recent form as well as a huge reputation and is justifiably a slight favourite.

LN:Why the concerns about the champion? Are they justified?

TY: A big question mark over Brook is his ability to make welterweight since he bulked himself up to 159lb to fight Golovkin.

There are concerns he will be drained come fight night and will be missing some of his power and stamina having had to slim down to a weight he isn’t comfortable at any more.

I don’t have too many worries about this as he has been attending regular weight checks to make sure he is losing the weight in a sensible way and has been regularly posting on social media and looks to be in very good shape. On Monday he weighed 148 pounds and one ounce, just one pound and one ounce over the welterweight limit which he should be able to lose comfortably.

LN: OK, how does Brook win this fight?

TY: The home advantage for Brook could prove very important given that he’s going to have a huge amount of support which he is sure to feed off and having the crowd behind you definitely influences the judges’ scoring.

In tight rounds when all Brook’s success brings a reaction from the crowd and Spence gets nothing it can just swing the scoring in Brook’s favour by making his work stand out.

LN: And finally, give us your best bets for this contest?

Errol Spence Jr Next Fight

TY: Based on the above, I think that Brook Decision or Technical Decision at 3/1 is a solid bet alongside Fight To Go The Distance at even-money.
