For the last 3 years, rumors have circulated over the next Batman movie and who will star as the caped crusader. Originally, back in 2015, Ben Affleck was responsible for the idea of a standalone Batman film. He began working on a script with one of DC’s former creative geniuses Geoff Johns and was hoping to get things off the ground sooner than later. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as Affleck hoped.
Not only did Warner Brothers decide to scrap Affleck’s script last year, they also decided to scrap Affleck as the director and gave that position to Matt Reeves. Over the last two months, Reeves announced that he was finishing up a new script and eventually confirmed that it will be a part of the DC Universe. However, with Affleck out as director and script writer, his time as Batman also appeared to be over. Additionally, Affleck’s two stints in rehab and Henry Cavill’s perceived departure as Superman have also led to many critics and fans believing that Ben is done as Batman.
Currently, there has been no definitive answer as to whether or not Affleck is done playing Batman. Warner Brothers and Matt Reeves have not confirmed one way or the other. With that said, rumors are swirling over who could replace Ben Affleck as the next Batman in Reeves’ film – “The Batman.”

These Actors Have Been Eliminated
According to various Hollywood reports and Social Media, the following actors have already been eliminated from playing Batman: Kit Harrington, Ryan Gosling and John Hamm have all personally ruled themselves out of the running for this role.
Another actor, who wasn’t even on this list of options, Oscar Isaac was eliminated from this role as he’s filming Star Wars Episode IX.
These Actors Make No Sense: Avoid Betting on Them
Although these actors are talented in their own right, they don’t fit the Batman or Bruce Wayne roles:
Riz Ahmed – with plenty of significant roles including co-starring in the recently released Venom, Ahmed is plenty capable of starring as the main character of just about any film. Unfortunately, he doesn’t really fit the bill as Bruce Wayne or Batman.
Joseph Gorodn-Levitt – he played Robin in the final Dark Knight Trilogy movie. Although he made a good Robin, Levitt is just not Batman material.
Scott Adkins – he has the martial arts skills to pull off some cool fight scenes and could possibly make a decent Bruce Wayne. But, he doesn’t have the acting chops that other stars on this list offer.
Jake Gyllenhaal – another talented actor, but he doesn’t give off a superhero vibe. He’s just a smaller version of Ben Affleck.
Armie Hammer – breaking into the mainstream as the Lone Ranger, Armie Hammer has also been linked to roles as Superman and Green Lantern. He has charisma, but also lacks that credible Batman vibe.
Ben Barnes – in my opinion, he’s a poor man’s Kit Harington. There’s no way he gets cast as Batman.
Richard Armitrage – he’s not well known enough to don the cape.
Dacre Mongomery – the 23 year old actor is best known for being a Power Ranger and playing on Stranger Things. He lacks the resume to play a major character like Batman.
Matthew Goode – another British actor with talent, but lacks any credibility as a superhero. Matthew Goode doesn’t scream “Gotham’s Dark Knight.” In fact, he’s more credible playing a role that Batman saves in the film.
Ryan Guzman – he’s just starting to break into the mainstream with his role on the hit TV show 9-1-1. He doesn’t have the resume to pull off the Dark Knight.
Will Smith – everyone knows who Will Smith is. Unfortunately, I don’t see Warner Brothers casting an African American Batman despite Smith’s popularity. And, if they did, then Idris Elba would make an amazing Bruce Wayne and The Rock would be an awesome Batman. Besides, last time we saw Smith in a DC film, he flopped as Deadshot in Suicide Squad. In reality, the entire film flopped as the storyline was awful.
The Favorites to Play Batman
The following Batman betting options are the favorites to place your money on:
Ben Affleck (+500) – as mentioned above, Affleck hasn’t been officially ruled out as Batman. With that said, he has to be the favorite to continue his recent run as the Caped Crusader.
The Field (+650) – as I’ve stated many times before, you always have to seriously consider taking The Field when available. And when it comes to Batman, The Field makes a lot of sense. I already discussed how Oscar Isaac wasn’t even a betting option, but still linked to the Batman opening.
Another actor linked to this role is Jack O’Connell, who also isn’t even a betting option. The 28-year old British actor has depth as an actor but isn’t a household name as of yet. However, he’s an example of how Warner Brothers and Matt Reeves could easily go outside of the box and pick someone not well known. That’s what makes The Field a “must bet” option.
The Darkhorse to Play the Dark Knight
Tom Hopper at +4000 is a great longshot to play Batman. Hopper has the look, stature (6’5”), and resume to be a credible Batman. When cleaned up, he can play a rugged Batman. When donning the suit, he can play an imposing figure of justice that leaves criminals shaking in their boots. Hopper has played significant roles in may hit shows like Black Sails, Merlin and Game of Thrones. At one point, he was also rumored to be on a short list to play Aquaman.
In a Perfect World: Morgan as Batman
In a perfect, or imperfect world depending on who you are asking, Jeffrey Dean Morgan would star as the next Batman. Morgan became a megastar with his portrayal as Negan on The Walking Dead. Additionally, Morgan was lobbying to be Batman in the Flashpoint film where Thomas Wayne becomes a brutal version of Batman. If you recall, Morgan played Thomas Wayne in the Batman v Superman film.
I believe Morgan could take Batman back to the dark, edgy vibes that we loved in the best of the Dark Night Trilogy and various Batman comics. In fact, he could also add some ruggedness to Bruce Wayne. Just please, allow Morgan to bring Lucille with him.
Who will be the Next Batman?
With shooting for The Batman film rumored to begin next year, casting for Batman will be the next priority now that Warner Brothers has approved Reeves’ script. With that in mind, there are two betting options worthy of your consideration: Ben Affleck (+500) and The Field (+650).
Until Affleck is officially ruled out or they announce another actor to star in the film as Batman, Ben has to be the favorite to continue as Gotham’s hero. However, the smart bet would be on The Field at +650. Not only does this option provide betting value, it also makes the most sense. Furthermore, Ben Affleck was the worst Batman so far. I, along with millions of other fans, am hoping that Warner Brothers does go with a new actor or bring back Christian Bale.

Batman Betting Odds Online
Some of the odds make sense, but others seem a little off the mark. Here’s how they stand:
- 7/2 Armie Hammer
- 11/2 Jake Gyllenhaal
- 13/2 Jon Hamm
- 8/1 Michael B. Jordan
- 8/1 Ben Barnes
- 9/1 John Krasinski
- 10/1 Jamie Dornan
- 16/1 Josh Brolin
- 16/1 Matthew Goode
- 16/1 Chris Pratt
- 16/1 Michael Fassbender
- 16/1 Chris Pine
- 18/1 Ryan Gosling
- 33/1 Leonardo DiCaprio
- 33/1 Idris Elba
- 50/1 Keanu Reeves
- 50/1 Daniel Craig
- 50/1 Colin Farrell
- 50/1 Tom Hardy
- 50/1 Chris Evans
- 100/1 Cillian Murphy
- 100/1 Ewan McGregor
- 100/1 Henry Cavill
- 100/1 Hugh Jackman
With Affleck out, Matt Reeves and DC Entertainment will need to find a new Batman and it will more than likely happen sooner rather than later as the film is expected to be released on June 25, 2021, that’s just a little over 2 years away.
Armie Hammer might have the best odds because he’s actually already been cast as Batman before. Hammer was slated to play the World’s Greatest Detective in George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal that was never made.
Hammer addressed the idea of playing a superhero on the Happy Sad Confused podcast back in 2017 saying, “I’m more interested now, in my artistic credibility and doing the projects that satiate me as an artist.”
Jake Gyllenhaal will also not be taking on the role of Batman. Gyllenhaal will be appearing as Mysterio in Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.
The actor debunked rumors that he could replace Affleck back in April of last year saying, “Wow that’s a very difficult question! The answer to that question is no.”
It’s also hard to see a number of the Marvel Cinematic Universe actors listed take on the role of Batman. I don’t see Star-Lord actor Chris Pratt, Thanos actor Josh Brolin, Captain America actor Chris Evans, or Killmonger actor Michael B. Jordan taking on the role of Batman.
There are also some actors who already appear in the DCEU that are listed. It’s hard to see them becoming Batman. Ewan McGregor is expected to play Black Mask in Birds of Prey and Henry Cavill is still Superman although there are rumors that he has left the role.
Jon Hamm has been rumored to take on Batman, and he’s expressed interest in the role, “I’d probably fit the suit. I’d have to work out a lot, which I don’t love. But, I am sure there is an interesting version of that being out there. And if they wanted to tap me on the shoulder and ask me to do it: why not?”
What’s interesting is the fact that this odds list looks to be more focused on older actors, but director Matt Reeves has indicated he’s looking to go younger with his Batman, and there have been significant rumors that he’s eyeing British actor Jack O’Connell, an actor who is not even on this odds list.
Reeves has also revealed his Batman will be quite a bit different from what we’ve seen in previous films with a focus on his detective skills.
“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”
